Hemodialysis is a treatment used for patients with kidney failure to filter waste, excess fluids, and toxins from the blood. Dr. AK Bhalla, a nephrologist, explains that during the procedure, blood is drawn from the body, passed through a dialysis machine that cleanses it, and then returned to the body. This process helps manage the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance when the kidneys can no longer perform their functions.

Dr. AK Bhalla emphasizes that hemodialysis typically requires treatment three times a week, with each session lasting around four hours. Patients usually need an access point, such as an arteriovenous (AV) fistula or graft, to connect to the dialysis machine. Maintaining the access site and ensuring it functions properly is crucial for effective hemodialysis.

While hemodialysis can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life, Dr. AK Bhalla notes that it is not a cure for kidney disease. It is a necessary, ongoing treatment for patients with end-stage kidney failure.
