Kidney stones are hard, crystalline deposits that form in the kidneys due to an imbalance of minerals and fluids in the body. Genetics can also play a role in the formation of kidney stones. When these stones move through the urinary tract, they can cause severe pain, often described as a sharp, stabbing sensation in the lower back or side. Other symptoms include blood in the urine, frequent urination, nausea, and vomiting. Treatment for kidney stones depends on the size and type of the stone. Smaller stones may pass on their own with plenty of water intake, while larger stones might require medical interventions like extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy, or surgery to break them down or remove them.
